What to Know When Marijuana Has Not Been Legalized in Your State-Part 2
In this post, we will continue to explore the states that have decriminalized marijuana. When marijuana possession has been decriminalized, it limits punishment and is often limited to a civil fine. Currently, twenty three states have legalized medical marijuana. Four states and Washington, D.C., allow recreational and medicinal use.
Ohio-
In Ohio, there are issues on the ballot to determine if medical marijuana use should become legal. Currently, the possession of marijuana has been decriminalized. Less than a 100 grams is a misdemeanor, but does not involve jail time. There is a $150.00 fine.
Rhode Island-
This tiny state has already approved the use of medical marijuana. They have also decriminalized marijuana possession for any reason. The first two offenses, for possession of an ounce or less, are civil infractions and come with a small fine of $150.00. However, get caught a third time and you are facing prison and major fines.
Vermont-
Since 2004, medical marijuana patients have been able to legally obtain and use the healing cannabis plant. On June 6, 2013, Governor Peter Shumlin signed legislation called HB200, decriminalizing the possession of one ounce or less of marijuana to only a civil infraction. A bill is currently being proposed to finally legalize recreational marijuana use in Vermont.
U.S. Virgin Islands
If you happen to be planning a trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands anytime soon, you are in luck. Marijuana is decriminalized there as well!
